Ulcer

Ulcer, a painful condition is an outcome of the sores in the lining of the digestive tract. The stomach acid damages the gastrointestinal lining, which aggravates the pain. Stomach pain is the most common symptom of the ulcer. Let us look into detail about causes and treatment of ulcer suggested by Ayurveda.

Ulcer is a result of the hyperacidity in the stomach. Hyperacidity comes in two stages, when the tissues are exposed to acids due to dryness or dehydration and when the stomach secretes excessive acids than required.

Ayurvedic Perspective of Ulcer

From ayurvedic perspective, Ulcer is an outcome of the Vata and pitta aggravating factors. Most of the ulcers form as the mixture of Pitta and Vata vitiation.

Anxiety and stress cause Vata vitiation, named Vataja Ulcer.

When the body produces more acid which enhances the intensity of stress cause Pitta vitiation, named Pittaja ulcer.

Vata vitiation ulcer is triggered by stress, anxiety and overwhelming thoughts. It usually occurs due to improper lifestyle and more of a mental disruption.  In addition, it is aggravated further by eating foods that lead to vitiation of vata.

Vata imbalanced ulcer leads to dryness in the mucous membranes of your small intestines and stomach. Dry membranes cannot protect the tissues from getting exposed to the acids. Even if the acid is present in lowest level in your stomach, it affects the tissues. When the acid burns the tissues, it results in hyperacidity and further leads to ulceration.

Pitta represents heat. The ulcer predominantly occurs due to improper foods that aggravates Pitta Dosha. A diet of heavily spiced and hot foods vitiates Pitta. Also, vitiating lifestyle (from emotional to physical lifestyle) aggravates Pitta. As a result, it cause pitta induced ulcer.  In many people, an intense and highly active (hyper) lifestyle also triggers the ulcer, due to Pitta imbalance.

Aggravated Pitta in the stomach / intestines secretes excessive acids than required. Overwhelming secretion of the acids affects the mucous membrane and the lining of the intestines.  Eventually, it causes burning sensation of hyperacidity, which quickly transforms into ulceration.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Ulcer

Ayurvedic Pareeksha Diagnosisis primary for the treatment of ulcer in Ayurveda. As stated earlier, identification of the type of energy imbalance helps with appropriate treatment. Whether it is Vata imbalance or pitta imbalance, ulcer is healed with proper diet that reduces the stomach acid and rebuilds the lining of the intestines.

  • Cooling and nourishing diet reduces the excessive secretion of the stomach acids.
  • Stay away from sour and spicy foods!
  • Eat a lot of sweet and bitter foods to balance the stomach acids, which balances the Dosha.
  • Stay hydrated throughout the day.

To rebuild the mucous membrane, you should include more oily foods and moist foods that comes with sweet taste.

When the ulcer is due to Pitta vitiation, encouraging the patient to relax more, and sail away from the hustles of the life. Shifting to a healthy lifestyle that doesn’t affect the mental stability helps pacifying pitta imbalance and ulcer.

The person with Pitta vitiation should also be encouraged to relax more and adopt less competitive activities. It is beneficial to treat their mind and adopting a healthy Pitta pacifying lifestyle. Since most of the ulcers are an outcome of the Pitta and Vata vitiation, a combination approach often helps.
